Every now and then an organisation needs to stop and take a good look at itself; after the rollercoaster ride of 2014, overwhelmingly positive, but some negative, the committee had a break over Christmas then got together to look at the future. Luckily our meeting room problem seems to be solved. So, onwards and outwards. With the full agreement of the group, the committee were re-elected with new boy Derek Payne having volunteered to take the place of Jayne Docksey. We rejected the idea of a Charity Festival this year, in view of all the other opportunities which are coming our way, and finally the printing of the group's latest anthology. (Watch this space). The format of our meetings is changing too. One date per month will be a planned writers workshop which we hope all members will attend and spend the best part of 2 hours writing creatively. The other meetings will be for member's own projects and interests, guest speakers (not always writers), and any rehearsal time needed for those involved in plays or sketches. We are after all a community group, but one whose members have many interests and writing genre preferences. Our wonderful secretary Anita Oxford will be responsible for planning the year ahead, so have a look at the meeting dates which now include some more detail about content.
Welcome to new Committee member Derek Payne. Derek is certainly no newcomer to the group, but will be the first to admit that for him, writing is a relatively recent endeavour. Nevertheless, Derek is now a published author and has one of the most enquiring minds you will ever come across. He is always up for new ideas and attends many of the arts, poetry, and lectures and talk events around the Stoke area. As City Voices will have less emphasis on running our own festivals and charity events this year, and more emphasis on collaboration with other groups and organisations, plus a change to the format of the meetings, this will be ideal for Derek to use his communication skills and ideas as a valued member of the committee.

IMPORTANT - The City Central Library's current building is expected to close sometime mid-2015. Following many changes by Stoke City Council, we understand that Stoke-on-Trent City Council's headquarters at the Central Business District will be made up of two office blocks, and that one of the buildings will also house the new Hanley Central Library. As of 20th January we were advised that there will be community rooms available in the CBD or elsewhere. Hanley Library have indicated that existing community groups using the library will be given priority for rooms, and have advised City Voices that meeting dates have been booked for us as we requested. It should be noted however that the library will close for 3 weeks to facilitate any move to the CBD. The Committee has been be working hard to make sure we have a Plan B - just in case!
It is with great regret that City Voices are saying Goodbye to committee member Jayne Docksey. Jayne is leaving the area to return to live in North Wales and continue with her studies. In her short time as a member of CV Jayne has made a real contribution to the group and had some great ideas. Things are changing at City Voices and we will miss Jayne greatly for her planning skills and her writing talent. Good luck Jayne!
